Online Data – Cookies

To make this site work properly, it sometimes occurs that small data files called cookies may appear on your device. Most big websites do this as a matter of course and some sites deposit dozens of cookies when you browse their contents. Cookies present minimal risks to privacy or security and can usually be ignored. To the best of our knowledge, our policy conforms to GDPR requirements.

What are cookies?

A cookie is a small text file that a website saves on your computer or mobile device when you visit the site. It enables the website to remember your actions and preferences. These include login, language, font size and other display preferences. They cover a period of time, so you don’t have to keep re-entering them whenever you come back to the site or browse from one page to another.

Our Privacy and Cookies Policy

How do we use cookies?

Gite-Milvain has a privacy and cookies policy. We do not deliberately use cookies. However, some features (such as Trip Advisor badges and widgets that may appear on our site from time to time) use several cookies in order to display on our site. Our policy is to try to remove these cookies if we can as we spot them.

We do not knowingly collect or analyse cookies or store cookie data in any form

The types of cookies which may appear on our site are third party. These may include Trip Advisor, online booking agents, diary management systems. They may potentially result in “pop-ups” from Trip Advisor (etc) appearing after you close your session. We can neither implement nor remove them without losing functions. For example “Award of Excellence” badges may disappear without the cookie present.

Remaining cookies may connect to PCI-DSS data security requirements. PCI-DSS confirms we comply and submit annual assessments for Certification in respect of online credit and debit card payments. You may set  your browser to prevent all cookies or third-party cookies

Comparison with other websites:

Many commercial web pages use cookies to remember:
(1) Your display preferences, such as contrast colour settings or font size.
(2) If you already replied to a survey pop-up that asks you if the content was helpful (so you won’t be asked again).
(3) maybe you have agreed (or not) to the use of cookies on the site.
(4) Also, some videos embedded in pages use a cookie to anonymously gather statistics on how you got there and what videos you visited.

Enabling such cookies is not strictly necessary for the website to work but it will provide you with a better browsing experience. You can delete or block these cookies, but if you do that some features of a site may not work as intended.

The cookie-data information do not identify you personally and the pattern data are fully under the Third Party entity’s control. These cookies are not for any purpose other than those described.

Unfair and invasive practices by some large American companies

It is off-topic, but we came across a well-known web listing and advertising company recently and read their privacy policy. This other company uses every available technology, including GPS, search results from unrelated companies, various device capabilities such as magnetometer, inclinometer, health monitors (etc), both to monitor the user’s every internet activity, but also to determine what devices are owned by other members of the household and to track all their interactions with the web. We consider such policies to be a violation of privacy rights and that hiding behind badly-framed legislation originating in various American states is no excuse to inflict such inappropriate and far-reaching invasions upon everyone else, Worldwide!

How to control cookies

In accordance with our Privacy and Cookies Policy, we offer advice here. You can control or delete cookies as you wish – for details, see aboutcookies.org. One can delete all cookies that are already on your computer. Users can set most browsers to prevent them from being placed. If you do this, however, you may have to manually adjust some preferences every time you visit a site. Also, some services and functions may not work correctly.
